Be the SALT & Live in the LIGHT

Be the SALT and Live in the LIGHT

This last few weeks I have come across multiple situations, conversations or even struggles that have led me into the book of Matthew. The saying “salt & light” is probably something we have all heard of or maybe seen written before. I, of course, clearly understand what salt is and what light is, but how many of us have ever really dug deep into the meaning of this metaphor???

Matthew 5:13-17
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltines be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Have you ever added salt to amp of the flavor of a meal? Have you ever turned on a lamp or a light before? I am pretty sure we can all say we have done both before …. and that we do both often. We add salt to something because it makes it better. We turn on a light so we can see or be seen. Jesus is telling us in Matthew to be just that…. Be the SALT and the LIGHT!

Be the Salt

I know sometimes we may go through days where we believe that we are not good enough…that we have a hard time believing who people say we are…but Jesus says different. He says WE ARE THE SALT…we (Christians) are different. Salt is a mineral of its own, it is distinctly different AND salt simply makes everything better.  Now when you think of YOU (a Christian) as the SALT, YOU are distinctly different too and YOU make this world & the people around you better! This is something we need to remember daily. No matter who you are, live as the presence of God is right next to you. Be the Salt of the Earth

Live in the Light

I know we can also have days where we want to stay in the dark and hide from the hard things…hide from the things we don’t want to face. But just as Jesus tells us to be the salt of the Earth, he also wants us to be the light… Live in the Light.   Don’t hide in the dark or even cover your light…let your light shine! Let others see YOU living in the light, shining bright so that you may help point them to Jesus. Our faith needs to shine!

So….how well am I actually reflecting the kingdom of God? Am I being salt? Do others see me living in the light?

To answer those questions…well its hard. I feel there are days that I am so confident in my walk and I actually do feel like I am salt and light….but then there are days I am so weak. I want nothing more than to be more salt and for other to see me in the light…but honestly,  I think my struggle to do this is to let me wall down! Be more vulnerable. (**ugh!! I just don’t like that word… ‘vulnerable’….probably because I am just not good at being vulnerable, lol.) I am a strong-willed, controlling, schedule oriented, goal seeker kinda person and to let go and be vulnerable is hard for me. I’m just in a phase of life where I am learning to be more vulnerable and accepting that I can’t do everything on my own and that it is OK to be vulnerable. Let others in! Let others HELP!

Dear Lord,
I pray that I can seek  your wisdom in my decisions. To not doubt myself when I ‘don’t know’ the answer but to allow myself to accept the ‘I don’t know’ and to strive to find the answers. I pray I stay committed to the things in life that drive me closer to you. To stay committed to the people in my life that tell me when I’m wrong and how to more grace… to not cover up my light… to be more vulnerable. Help me to live out my identity and to be more merciful. Amen.

XOXO ~D~
